Meet the Candidate

David Hunter Thrift

Hunter Thrift is running for re-election to the Thomasville City Council. A lifelong resident of Thomasville, Hunter has always had a deep-rooted passion for his hometown and remains committed to working for a better Thomasville.

Hunter has served on the Thomasville City Council for the past six years. For the last four, he has led as Chairman of the Personnel Finance Committee, providing steady leadership on city budgeting, staffing decisions, and long-term financial planning. He also serves as the Council Liaison for both the Parks and Recreation Department and the Lake Thom A Lex Commission, working to support and expand recreational opportunities for the community.

His dedication to public service began early when he interned with Mayor Raleigh York in 2016, gaining firsthand experience with municipal budgeting, finance, and day-to-day operations. Over the past ten years, Hunter has played an active role in the North Carolina Memorial Day Parade and Ceremonies Committee, serving as Parade Chairman for the last seven years.

In addition to his council service, Hunter previously served on the Davidson County Board of Adjustments. He is an active member of the Thomasville Rotary Club, where he formerly served on the Board of Directors, and he currently serves as President of the Thomasville Civitans Club. His past civic involvement also includes service on the Thomasville Historic Preservation Committee.

Hunter is a proud graduate of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Humanities and a minor in History. He began his college career at Davidson County Community College and remains a strong advocate for local education. He previously taught middle school English and Social Studies in the Davidson County School System and now serves as the Executive Director of Communities In Schools of Thomasville, a nonprofit focused on helping students stay in school and succeed in life.

Hunter is married to his high school sweetheart, Maddie. In February 2025, they welcomed their first child, Charlotte Rose. Family, faith, and community remain at the heart of everything he does.

With your support, whether through volunteering, spreading the word, or making a contribution, we can win this race and continue the progress we’ve made. Let’s keep working together to build a stronger, better Thomasville.
